"Behind every successful business is a properly maintained server room. Learn the non-negotiable practices that keep your data safe and systems running."
A server room is not just a closet with computers. It's the nerve center of your organization, and neglecting best practices can lead to data loss, security breaches, and costly downtime.
### Temperature and Humidity Management
Computers generate heat. Without proper cooling, components degrade rapidly.
**The standard:** Maintain 18-24°C with 35-55% relative humidity. Too hot and processors throttle performance; too cold and static electricity risks damage.
We recommend:
- **Dedicated AC unit** with redundancy. If your primary cools fails, a backup automatically activates
- **Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle layout:** Arrange server racks so intake vents face a cold aisle and exhaust faces a hot aisle. This dramatically improves cooling efficiency
- **Humidity monitoring:** Install air quality sensors and automated alerts
### Power Distribution
Do NOT plug multiple servers into a standard wall outlet using a power strip. This is a fire hazard and causes voltage fluctuations.
Invest in a Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) with circuit breakers and surge protection. All servers in your rack plug into this single unit, which itself is plugged into a dedicated 3-phase power outlet.
### Cable Management
A server room with tangled cables is a nightmare for troubleshooting and replacement. Implement these practices:
- **Color-coded cables** (red for power, blue for data, green for voice)
- **Velcro cable ties** (never zip ties—they're difficult to remove)
- **Vertical cable runs** through structured conduits
- **Labeling:** Every single cable must be labeled at both ends
### Physical Security
Server room access should be restricted. Install biometric locks and keep an access log. Ransomware attacks often begin with physical theft of backup drives.
### Backup Power (UPS)
A single power outage ruins everything without a UPS. We recommend Lenovo or APC UPS systems that hold power long enough to gracefully shut down servers (2-5 minutes) or to allow the backup generator to kick in.
